New Jersey National Guard Soldiers and Airmen alphabetize online, motor vehicle, and hand-written voter registration forms at the Superintendent of Elections, Atlantic County, Mays Landing, N.J., Nov. 3, 2020. More than 370 New Jersey National Guard (NJNG) Soldiers and Airmen are assisting election officials in 19 counties by performing duties in support of the General Election. This is the first time the NJNG has supported a general election. The Citizen Soldiers and Airmen will primarily assist in processing vote-by-mail ballots under the supervision of county election officials, a mission successfully executed during New Jersey’s Primary Election in July. This state active-duty mission is being undertaken at the request of the County Boards of Elections. This support is an extension of the Guard’s active role in preventing the spread of COVID-19 in New Jersey. (This photo has been altered by blurring out personal information on the ballots.) The forthcoming UK general election prompted me to look out this little curio from 1987. It was a 'factbook' produced by Independent Television News, tailor made for geeks like me.
All in all it was a creditable publication, which gave a comprehensive overview of the parliamentary system under which the 1987 election was being held.
The front cover features the main party political players of the day: Neil Kinnock, the 'two Davids' of the Liberal-SDP Alliance (ruthlessly lampooned by Spitting Image) and Thatcher.
I am not aware of anything like the ITN Election Factbook having been produced before or since. A 2015 equivalent would make for an interesting comparison!

Vote for change
The revelation that three former Labour ministers were bidding for consultancy work by parading their government connections gives further insight into the shabby morality of Westminster politics.
But when politicians can get away with leading this country into wars based on lies, it is hardly surprising that they think they can get away with anything. We need greater transparency and more genuine democracy.
That’s why I am a supporter of Vote for Change. They are a lobby group campaigning for electoral reform. As they state on their excellent website ‘the only way we're going to make politicians understand their responsibilities to the people they represent is to make them more accountable at elections. It's time to kick out the antiquated First-Past-the-Post voting system that has allowed them to get away with so much and bring in a new style of elections where every single vote counts.’
Indeed it is. Check out their website and given them your support too.

The polling station looked really busy this morning as I was waiting for my bus on the other side of the road. I'm voting later on tonight. Exciting times. Lets hope for a hung parliament. That would be awesome.

For the last four General Elections I have prepared a piece of art work, starting on the day the manifestos are published.
My self imposed rules are that I record only what is reported in the media, and that the piece is completed on Election Night whilst listening to the results.
It's a fascinating task as the changes in emphasis can be immense and then easily forgotten as the process rolls on.
This year, for the first time ever, events have consipired against me, with a family wedding and a house move, so I have had to scale back my efforts and make a much simplified version. I won't even be here on Election Night, so the last emotional stages will be missing.
My take on this year's Election is that it is an election by the media, with the first televised debate between the leaders of the three main political parties, and also the use of such things as blogs and twitter.
The piece will be in the form of a textile "page from my sketchbook" and I have shown here one of the central images. This is from a press photograph of the first debate and I loved how the photographer managed to capture the dynamics of the group.
I transferred the image to calico using the Acrylic Mat Medium method and then stitched this to my previously prepared background.
I have already voted, using a postal vote!
I was privileged to attend the 2024 General Election count for the constituency of Lichfield, and took some photos of the declaration where Labour's Dave Robertson defeated incumbent Sir Michael Fabricant of the Conservatives.
